Necessities For Your Granny Cottage or Flat
It’s no secret that Americans are living longer and more active lives. As your parents get older you may consider a multi-generational living situation for convenience and cost savings. If your family is considering renovating your home to accommodate 1 or more seniors, you have two options: You can add a stand-alone Granny Cottage to your property, or you can add a Granny Flat or Apartment to your existing floorplan. Which option is right for your family will be determined by the level of care you need to provide to your aging parent(s) and what level of privacy and convenience you desire.
Long-Term Guest Necessities
If you plan to have an older family member move in with you for a significant period of time, a spare bedroom will not be sufficient. Long-term guests need privacy, certain conveniences, and their own personal space for them to feel at home. Because of this, we believe your granny cottage or flat should include these features:
If you opt for a Granny Flat over the more private Granny Cottage, a separate, private entrance is a must-have. Having a private entrance allows your family member to avoid disturbing the entire household as the come and go. The separate entrance also allows your guest to enjoy privacy and convenience.
As your aging parent gets more advanced in years they may eventually require a walker or wheelchair. You aging parent may also no longer be able to get into a tub safely and may have difficult rising from a sitting position. Because of these potentials we recommend having your Granny Cottage or Flat fully adaptable to ADA Compliance. This includes a walk-in shower with slip-resistant tiles, wide hallways and doors, and strategically placed stud that allow for easy installation of handrails.
Your long-term guest will need all the essentials for day-to-day life, including an efficient kitchen, washer & dryer, private bathroom, living/dining room, and a spacious bedroom. A fully-functioning Granny Cottage with a comfortable separate space will allow your guest, as well as your family, to have adequate privacy and independence.
Your apartment or stand-alone cottage doesn’t have to be used for an aging parent. This space can be used for a guest-house, to accommodate visiting relatives, or for extra income as a rental.
